 In Articles

Having a sense of life balance includes taking care of our health in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, getting enough good quality sleep and also preventive care.  Preventive care is an area where men (pardon the  stereotype) need to pay better attention.  Men tend to neglect preventive care and so, they may not discover their health is at risk from conditions such as high blood pressure or pre-diabetes where blood sugar levels are elevated, but not yet enough to become a clinical diabetes case.

Many health conditions can be present for years unattended and may only be detected during a check-up or once a serious problem arises such as a heart attack, stroke, or major injury occurs.  It is important to get your blood pressure checked and get a blood glucose test regularly, before a potentially serious problems arises.  So everyone, particularly the guys out there, could take better care of themselves in the preventive care arena.  Women could improve in their willingness to access preventative care as well, but overall women do tend to be better about arranging regular wellness exams or periodic check-ups.

To get the most from your preventive care you should know your ‘biometric’ numbers such as blood glucose level, cholesterol both HDL (good) and LDL (bad), triglyceride level and BMI, as these are all key indicators for various conditions.  While BMI is only minimally helpful in itself, in combination with other biometrics it is very helpful.  Knowing your biometric numbers and monitoring them on a regular and on-going basis is a very important part of preventive care.

So, guys, gals get your check-ups related to your gender.  Women, you need to get your pap test.  Guys, I know you do not want to hear it, but getting a prostate exam now can save you a lot of grief later on.  By taking care of yourself and following some of these basic tips, you can build resilience and bring more balance into your life which can make you and your organizations a lot more successful.
